Hi everybody, I am trying to import a landXML that was created in civil 3d into revit. I know I can just import a dwg file of contours into revit, however by doing so revit simplifies the surface drastically. (ie. smoothes curbs over really bad.) I have tried importing contours that are at <1' intervals and it still does not give a surface that is anywhere near as accurate as it should be. I have done a lot of searching to try to figure out how to import a landXML and all i have came up with is a blog entry and some code for a add-in. The blog is at http://thebuildingcoder.typepad.com/blog/2010/01/import-landxml-surface.html

I have tried to implement it into revit but I am getting an error that hopefully someone on here will be able to help me with. I am attaching a picture of the error.

So my question is, is there a better way to import a site into revit that is included with revit? (from civil 3d) If not, can anyone help me with the error I am getting?

Revit 2011 Build 20100326_1700(x64) 64 bit running on windows 7 64-bit

Let me know if anyone needs more information or clarification on anything.

Thanks.

check out Siteworks, by Eagle Point this is an add in to Revit and seems pretty slick. It also allows for easy input of LandXML files I believe.

I did find that, however I am a student and I cant say I have 2000 dollars laying around. I really wished they offered a student edition.

Contour intervals have nothing to do with accuracy, points control accuracy.  If you have points at the bottom and top of curbs or other sharp chances, your model will reflect this.

I think what petersonm is refering to are alignments and additional information not contained in the normal points file but are contained in an XML file.

Hey guys thanks for the replies, actually mbsteve I don’t really care about the alignments, profiles etc. I just want a surface that actually looks like the triangulated surface that I import. I’m attaching a picture of what I am running into. On the left is a triangulated surface being imported to revit as a .dwg file, the middle is what it looks like when I select the imported surface to create a surface, and on the right is what the surface looks like when I finish the create surface and delete the imported .dwg. (the surface on the right is zoomed out a little bit more than the other 2) It’s like revit is building the surface off of contours that it creates from the surface data and not the actual triangles that are in the file. Is there any way that I can force revit to build a surface that is closer to the original?

Looks like you have a street intersection there. Revit makes it's own surface from the point file. You can manipulate the Revit contours to match the ones previously created by the other program. Mind you the other program may be making similar assumptions and creating similar triangles etc. Any way you can add points not on the contour but just below or above it in elevation to kind of shove the contours around a little bit. I have done this numerous times to get the lines that I want. I attached a method of doing street work which is a little cumbersome but creates a good effect.

Thanks mbsteve. I guess I never thought about using the massing tools to create roads. But at the same time it kind of sucks that I can’t import a surface from civil into revit and get it to look right. I was hoping to do all the site grading in civil and bring it into revit to add landscaping, and then render. It is just really frustrating that I can’t do that, especially since I have spent quite a few hours in civil building all the roads etc. It seems like a fairly simple task that I should be able to do without too many problems... but again thanks. I will make it work. If you or anyone else have any other suggestions on how to improve the workflow between civil and revit it’s appreciated.
