When drawing a floor in sketch mode two short lines appear near the center of the first line that you place. What are they for?  Thanks

Indicates Floor Span Direction. There is also a tool to switch that direction on the ribbon.

You'll see the same thing happen when you model beam systems.  In beam systems the purpose is most evident -- this is the direction that the beams will run in.
