Hi all, Guess I'm a bit of a newbie here, but I'm gonna get right down to business:

While Using Revit 2011 (On a Windows 7 64-bit, machine), I've been trying to create some custom materials for a project, but when I attempt to render custom made or edited materials, the objects that the materials are applied to are invisible in the rendering. The normal materials available in the project all render fine, but even changing the finish or color on a premade material will make it disappear in the rendering. This takes place even in new projects, so it is likely not a file specific setting issue. Reinstalling Revit did not have any effect, and this could be a hardware or machine specific issue I suppose, as this is the first time I have attempted to render custom materials on this machine. The materials all render correctly on another Windows XP install on a laptop.Just to clarify, this is not a materials library transfer issue. That is to say, materials created on this machine in a single project cause the objects to become invisble in the rendering, and it is not an issue of missing materials from transferred files.Any enlightenment on this issue would be nice, as it has me perplexed.I am relatively new to Revit (About 3 months of use so far), and have not had any instruction, though I am fairly competent Computer-wise, so I'll apologize now for any gaps in my knowledge.

This site has a lot of information on it if you learn how to search the forums and to look at the similar threads always listed below a post.  In this case, please read the first one below "Cusom materials rendering black".

i feel like i have tried everything but still can't get it to work... did you figure out how to solve this problem???

What material did you assign to that element? Can you show us some images with the properties/materials of that element? did you install the Web update?

Here is one of the materials giving me issues. I wanted to use hedge instead of grass, so i duplicated the grass material, renamed it, then replaced the image for rendering to hedge. The file is in the correct location and not missing.  But when i render the object is gone entirely. Here is a shot of the material properties.

I did not get the web update for 2011, but i just got 2011 about 2 months ago from autodesk students. Do i even need the update or is that for earlier versions?

Maybe I am not creating new materials the correct way. Is there any step that I might be missing whenever I duplicate a material and assign a new one that could cause this?

It looks like you have the same problem I do, hle3. Whenever any customisation is applied to any of the materials, Revit will not render it. Thank you for posting the pictures, I think that'll add a bit of clarity.

I have found that using another computer to create the materialsand then transferring the revit files will allow the affected computer to render edited textures, though some weird transformations have been applied in the transfer. (Some tiles went from 1:4 column to row to 0.98:4 column to row).

As far as missing a step I don't think you are, as I have used the same process on another computer (a bootcamp Mac using XP) and it works fine.

Currently the only solution I have is the abovestated workaround. I applied an update available during the install, though I don't know if that is the same as the web update.

I get this problem too on Revit 2011, Windows 7 x64 system.

But, when I use the same file, and render it on windows xp 32-bit system, it works, nothing was lost.

I haven't try it with windows 7 x32 system.

If you look closely on the journal, you'll find that it is a mental ray shadder error, something was lost during the 64-bit transfer.

hle3 - Was your post the answer to Typhoon?  - You assigned hedge to the counter?

What you posted is indeed hedge and it is assigned to hedge.  So what is the problem with this?  So us where you assigned this to the counter if that is what you did.

You have like 3 different questions at once - stick with one.  Then give us enough information to help you.

Thank you for all of the responses. I too am using revit 20111 on windows 7 x64, and I think is the same error with that and I can probably just render on a different computer to fix it. Sorry for the many questions. The images were of different instances in my project that were not rendering. The hedge was in a different place than the counter, but was having the same problem.

I am a newbie as well, but I am having the EXACT same probem you all are.  Just wanted to change the standard paint color from white to black for an existing canopy roof, and what previously rendered perfectly as a white canopy, now is completely gone - only in the rendering.  Its sill there in hidden line, shaded, realistic, etc.  I'm kind of at a stand still because there are so many more materials I need to create/tweak for a presentation.  Our Autodesk retailer/training guy knows about the issue and has sent our file to Autodesk, so I am waiting to see what they come back with.

I know this is a pretty old thread, but our Autodesk supplier found a solution.  This completely fixed the problem, and have had no futher problems in a couple weeks.  Here is the e-mail from him.  Follow the link instructions.  Hope this helps.

Okay,..just heard back from Autodesk...he's thinking that the following should fix the issue..

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Autodesk-Revit-Architecture/Revit-doesnt-render-when-I-change-a-simple-material-from-brush/td-p/2860322

this link is to a discussion on the Autodesk forms...Ryan (one of the Autodesk techs) points out the procedure for installing the Material library...

Thanks dsickinger! Simply cleaning up my temporary folder fixed it.
