Hey Reviters,

I've got a patterned floor that I need to render to look like oak - so I've applied a mid tone wood colour to the individual extrusions. I wanted to use tone to differentiate the patterning, though this hasn't been so effective in the render I did.

 I have some questions:

1) What is the most effective way to make a patterned timber floor, without making the file enormous (and slow)?

2) How do I apply a woodgrain so that it is directional and follows the pattern I've created?

3) There are weird gaps on the edge too that I'm not sure what they are.

I've attached as many images as I can to try and show what's going on - any ideas on what I should do from here?

Thanks in advance - this forum is amazing,

  1. Photoshop or GIMP to make the pattern, although it looks like you've already got that... (nice image btw)
  2. Since it looks like you've created a pattern already, I would suggest making a model fill pattern in your project that is just a cross hatch representing the outline of the main pattern (so 3'x3'?).  You can then align the fill pattern to your render pattern using the "Align Texture" tool in the render appearance tab of the materials dialog (as demonstrated here: http://revittotd.com/02/857)
  3. Are you using a bump or transparency map in this image?  It almost looks like it's not "flooding" the entire area with the render texture.
HTH,

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!
