I have a problem in the views - the edges of items (in this case a kerb done as a floor sweep) keep on becoming all garbled and wobbly.

VG is set to coarse, coordinates have been moved & are only 50m away from the point at which these views were created. Any suggestions for clearing this up? I'm running  2.66Ghz with 8mb ram (apparently, I have no idea really ;-)

try this: right click view cube, select - orient to direction - top

in 09 the options may be different.  i'm thinking it may be orient to view - top

No, it doesn't look as if it's the view cube unfortunately! I wish it was that simple Sad but thanks!

It looks like the same problem in Autocad when you have the curves set to a low number of lines so they look like they're hexagonal

Grrrr it's driving me mad!

thats a common problem with 09. i had alot of problems with it doing that and going into this weird shaded/wireframe look. reorienting the view seemed to help temporarily, unfortunately you may just have to ignore it.
