I am looking for some resources regarding effective ways to split up a building and link files together between firms (not just disciplines) and share the models.  It seems the easiest way is to have a main host file that contains all links and contains the views and sheets for annotating/printing.  Unfortunately, when more than one architectural firm is working on different shared parts of the building and scope, it is necessary to maintain ownership of different sheets and views in their respective models.  Should we be sharing a central accessed by WAM or FTP?  I am working on a project where there is a design architect and an architect of record who have teamed up and split responsibilities based on fees and deliverables.

This may be a strange way to use revit, but I can't have contractual negotiations determined by the way we use revit.  Just have to be creative and find a way to get the job done.

Like I said, looking for some resources/best practices/publications, whatever I can find.

There is very little history on this subject.  You have some real problems unless you have a way to use the same central model.  Linked files works for cross discipline but because you need to own views, sheets and be able to cross model boundries with tags, schedules etc, you will have problems with links.

FTP will only work for linked files.  You need something like the Revit Server but that requires a cross network connection.

Good luck - please keep us informed of what you do and how it works.

Thank you.  Sharing the same model seems like a potential legal nightmare.  Who is responsible if the file gets corrupted, work gets lost, etc.?

Currently we are getting around a few of the issues by having specific views in the linked file that contain annotations only that we export to CAD and insert into our sheets so that we can show, for example, building section tags and other view references in our sheets.  Scheduling items will require a lot of time coordinating between offices, sharing parameters and families, agreeing to certain standards, etc.

That was a huge thing that I faced when I was working at the University of Wyoming.  We had students from UNL and MSU also working with our students on projects and it was really difficult because a central file can't be hosted online on an FTP or similar.  The only way I found that would allow this was to set up a WAN (wide area network) which costs a bundle to maintain.  We ended up just having to be very careful on what each portion of the teams were working on so the files could be linked and shared between three universities.  Most of the projects had multiple buildings so we pretty much just designated a building to a school.
