Hello

I have some cranked columns that i modeled in place (swept a profile along a cranked path)

Is there anyway i can 'tag' these in the same way as i can with standard columns so that they get a column tag and appear in the column schedule?

Did you set this model to the column category?  Did you add the correct shared parameters to it for tagging?

Did you set the category as "Column" or "Structural Column"? I don't think you'll need to add any parameters if it's a structural column.

I fear i might have set it as 'column' rather than structural column. is there any way i can change the usage of the model in place once it has been drawn?

Yes. "Family Caragory and Parameters" will let you pick a new category. In 2011 it's on the home tab, left end of the ribbon. 2010, it's on the right end of the ribbon. In either case, it's next to the Family Types tool.
