Remember, a 2011 file can not be opened in 2010 but a 2010 file can be opened in 2011.  This may be your problem.

Open revit first, and then find the file from within revit. that's the quick way.

Windows is confused and using the first "revit" it remembers or was once told is the default application for .rfa and .rvt files.  you can right click on the family file and select "open with"  and then "choose default program" then "browse" and find the revit 2011 .exe file.
