I've been using Families and In-place families to generate shapes such as fireplaces. I understand there is also a massing tool. Can anyone tell me in what way the massing tool might be more useful than the families editor?

the massing tool is there to help you see how your design works, in term of relationship between your building to itself and to other elements near (other buildings...) you can turn your mass into walls and floors and allows you to continue working on your model. offcourse this is not all mass can do! Smile I wouldn't use massing to create in place families though...

What was the soulution? I am sitting with the same problem. Converting a mass to a roof, it seems like it's only possible with floors.

In the "massing" use the "Roof by Face"...
