I have been festering with this for a few hours now, looking at a dozen threads and I can't get anything to work. I'd like to rotate a family in a left or right view when I nest it into another family I'm creating to build a radiant heat manifold. I've use the Generic Model.rft template for all my manifold accessories. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP!! I've attached one of the files...

In Family Categories try turning off Always Vertical and turning on Work Plane Based. Then pick a new plane for it. You can use faces of other geometry as work planes. It seems like it wants a horizontal WP initially (won't let you pick anything else), but once it's on a new WP you can rotate it.

That seems to be working! I thank you a thousand time over! Also, anyone know why blends and revolves look like crap when trying to make a circular object? They all end up looking like octagons, even in the rendered model...
