i have been trying for sometime now albeit unsucessfully to create a custom room tag whose format is suppose to display as follows:

Room name

length x Width

I was able to figure out the length x width section ( credit the to Darryl Gregoire) but cannot get the Room name section to work either as editable upon insertion or to some how create a list of rooms in a revit catalog and have a drop down list to choose the room type I want say for e.g. bedroom, kitchen, Family Room etc.

Help me Please if possible. Thanks in advance.

Regards

Indigo

Are you saying that the Room name is coming in as not editable?  That is, you can't click on the room and edit the room name after tagging it?  If so, it sounds as though you've created a shared parameter for you room name and haven't added the shared parameter to the project and applied it to rooms.  In which case it raises a question, why have you created a shared parameter for room name as its in built.

I'll stop there on that item for fear of going completely down the wrong path based on assumptions... Puh

If you create a Room Schedule you can add rows to your schedule for rooms that haven't been placed.  If you have a default set that you always use you can add all of these and include them in your template.  Then when you go to place rooms, in your options bar be sure to pick from the drop down which room you'd like to place, instead of creating a new room.

Hope that helps...

First off thanks for your quick reply to my question. However I do not think that the parameter for the room name was shared. I am going to attach what I have done so far. The stamp is basically a generic annotation family that was later nested in a generic model family. The attached File room name is what I attempted to nest for use as the Roomname section. Hope my explanation was clear and that the attached files give a better sense of my explanation.

Okay, so you are basically placing this as a Generic Model and not using Room Tags at all...

Personally I'd just create a Room Tag for the name and then use the generic model family with the generic tag for the dimensions.  You wouldn't be able to schedule this though.  From memory I think I've seen an API tool out there that manually adds this information to the room element as a shared parameter so it can be tagged.  This can be done without the API, but the connection between the physical dimensions of the room and the room object itself would have to be manually updated when changes occur.  The API simply automates the changes when required.

However, realistically I'm not a fan of putting room dimensions in the room tag because I don't do a lot of residential work and rooms are not always rectangular...  As such I'd much rather use dimensions and callout the area of the room in my tag which I think is more valuable information than its dimensions...
