I am using a generic face-based cube in my models for various items in R2009 (a wall safe, a napkin dispenser, a computer), but if I want to tag them or schedule them under a specific Family Type (specialist equipment, plumbing fixture, electrical equipment) for room data sheets I have to go and replicate the family, change the Family Category & reload it. Is there a way to vary the family category within the generic cube model so I don't end up with a duplicated model? I have looked at the 'Family Type' parameter but think I'm barking up the wrong tree...

There is no way to do this in a single family. I don't think you really want to any-way beacuse you loose all category VG control. For some things, you can use multi-category tags and schedules but I don't believe that is the asnwer for this.

Thanks So what's the intent with the Family Type parameter field? I've not worked out what it's for yet!

It's for changing types of nested families. If you nest Family B (with multiple types) inside Family A, when you load Family A into a project you can control which Family B type is displayed.

I forgot to add, to use it select your nested family and on the options bar you will have an option to add a parameter. In the project that parameter will show up as a drop down in the properties that will let you select different types.
