Hello,

I am new to this site and in the need for a new computer to run revit2011. I understand it is best to get a computer with a video card from the autodesk supported graphic hardware list. My problem is that I can never match a video card from a specific laptop or desktop to the supported list. Here is a system I had quoted from Dell for just over $1,000.

Dell Studio 1558 laptop

Intel® Core™ i5-460M 2.53GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 3M cache

6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz

500GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570, 512MB

Any comments on these specs? Can anyone help me find either a laptop or desktop within a $1,000 budget that will work best? I guess my biggest concern is finding the right video card that will be supported.

Glad I found this site. Its just what I have been looking for!

 Thanks!

Nick

Check out Dells new machine, XPS 8100, I'm planning to get that machine but still debating if i should get Dells workstation instead but idk.

My classmate just bought the XPS 8100 with i7 and 8GB of RAM and he said it took 15 mins to render at best setting.  He purchased his at Bestbuy.

You need a video card that has a decent amount of memory to play games at high-resolution with quality graphics settings enabled. Good video cards usually have lots of memory because all of that GPU horsepower will go to waste if you don't have enough memory space.

I'm using a 24" monitor and I can't imagine using anything less.  There are many times where I need to look at the plan view and a section view at the same time.

Can someone tell what's better....the i7 quad core or the Xeon quad core assuming they both have the same processor speed?

I don't know about the i7(see link below), but I have dual quad core Xeon's and i have no performance issues at all. Revit runs great, and rendering is fast. I also suggest getting a large screen if possible. I use a 32" flat LCD TV w/ HD for my monitor. I think I would go even larger next time I upgrade my monitor.

Thanks a lot for the info.  With my current system, I can't even pan around without having to wait. Sad

Jterrel,

What processor speed are they?  Dual quad core??...what does that mean exactly?  Is that 8-way processing?

Jterrell,

What video card do you have and what size is it?  Also, how much RAM does your system have?  Are you using Revit MEP or Revit Architecture?  Are you using this for school of work?

I have 8 GB ram and an ATI FireGL v5600 video card. I use RAC daily, and I have used the student version of RME for a school project.

The processors I run are Intel Xeon E5405 2GHz, and there are two of them, and each processor is quad core, so I guess that adds up to eight cores.
