HI,

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the best way of creating opening doors.

Essentially, I need them to show open in plan and closed in 3D (which is the standard way of display them).

But on occasion, I would like to show them open in 3D – this would only be for when we export the model into Navisworks and walk around the building.

I guess I can add a parameter for an opening percentage, but is there any way to make this a ‘global parameter’ (you can tell I’m a bit new to Revit), so I change one parameter and all doors update to show open.

Or, could I get up a dedicated 3D which shows with door open (as opposed to the others which shows with doors closed) – and use that one to export to Navis?

I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Cheers.

Global ...yes and no - You could create your doors with an "open" parameter>  Then select all doors in your project (except storefront) and because it is common to all, you could change it.

Dedicated 3D with doors set ... only if you used  design options could you do this.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, to do this I would need to edit all of the door types in my project and add the parameter to each?

Thanks for your reply.

You got it.... but obviously just adding the parameter does nothing.  Add the parameter and a 3D element that shows in open setting (off in closed setting) and with the normal 3D door element off in the open setting.

Does it need to be open or can it be invisible? If it needs to be open (180 degrees) then yes, you need to modify the family.

If you want it to be invisible so the eye can see through the door and the person in navisworks or solibri can walk through it without the crayz 'ghost' effect, then you can change this in the display graphics.  Go to Visibility Graphics (VV) and go to Doors. There is a '+' button to expand panels. Click that. Un check the box for panels and hit apply. The door panels will vanish.

If you have nested families, where the panel is its own family. This is a bit more complext. Here you would have to edit the family and associate the panel with a visibility parameter. My guess is you have the other option where you can simply turn off the panels for all doors in visibility graphics.

I'll try that - thanks for your response.

I think in practive, what we really want is openable doors, its a shame that the Revit standard content is not built to accommodate this...

I might try the suggestion by WWHub, but will need to look at how long this will take to set up.

Cheers.
