I have a  oval canopy over a cash couter for a cafe. The canopy has a dome on top. How do I mass that Oval or eliptical dome?

If you use 2010 or 2011 you can create that with the "Conceptual Mass" (parametric if you want).

Check this too:  http://www.youtube.com/user/zachkron#p/u/20/8N1wI5u7Kes

See "Domedemo"

Hi Typhoon and happy new year ! I have a similar problem and the video helped me a lot.

However, I don't manage to do a mass that's parametric in three dimensions : it's ok for the height and what he called the width but I can't figure out how to add a parameter for the distance between the ellipses : the reference plane where it was drawn does move, but the ellipse doesn't stay on the plane so it has no effect (it works for the little line that closes the shape as it was possible to align it with a reference plane and add a constraint; but i'm not able to do the same with the ellipse).

I've added my file (actually it's a quarter of an ellipse) : the problem is with the ellipse that's on reference plane B (Roof_Width_1 has no effect).

Thx !! Smile

Delete that ellipse and create a new one BUT FIRST don't forget to select the "WORK PLANE" (that "ref. plane") then go to a elevation view and draw the ellipse, the rest you know...

thx for the fast answer ! maybe there's something I don't get because it still doesn't work. I did set plan be as work plane before drawing the ellipse. But then I can't add a constraint to lock it with the plane. Before the I create the solid form, the ellipse does stay on the plane. However it doesn't happen anymore after it has been created.

Could you attach the file so I can have a look on the thing I must have missed ? (I'm using revit 2012 or 2011 but I guess it's the same as doing it on project vasari)

thx !

it doesn't work on your file either (changing Roof_Width_1 doesn't affect the shape). Well maybe I didn't explain what I want to do properly : I'd like to be able to tweak the shape in all three dimensions. However, it still doesn't work on the width. Maybe we can't do this otherwise we should have been able to lock the ellipse on the plane.

Anyway, thx for the help ! I'll just do it manually and reload the family in the project.

After creating the surface just turn on "X-Ray" then use the align tool to align and constrain the "points" to the ref. plane.

Thank you very much Typhoon ! I really appreciate your help and patience. It didn't work for me because I tried to align the ellipse (not possible) instead of the two points that are creating it.

Thanks again !

Btw, are you an architect ? Do you have a website where you showcase your work ? I bet you 're able to do very acurate 3D modelings of your sketches !!
