I am trying to use the Kolbe windows and doors. When I download and extract a window or door model I cannot get the shared parameter file they give you to asociate with the model. Therefore I do not get all the types when I use the model. As anyone used these and gotten everything to work?

The video on their website doesn't explain how to bring the models into Revit. It only shows you how to use them once they are loaded into Revit.

And please don't tell me to read the Revit Families Guide. It doesn't explain how to get a shared parameter file you already have to associate with a family that has already been created.

BTW, answers that point you to the help file or some other guide are non-answers. I look at the documentation before I post a question to this forum and can only rarely find the information I am looking for. The documentation provided by Autodesk is good, but very general in nature and only sometimes addresses the particular question or situation I have. I find the look-in-the-help-files non-answers in this forum condescending and pointless. If you are only going to tell me to read the help files, then don't post an answer to the question.

Thanks,

Daryl Stockton

Hey D., I too find the REVIT help is getting weaker and weaker each version and now you don't get any tutorials either.
Also not a big fan of the reply 'Read the help menu'. I once read a thread here where someone said they were going to simply reply with the characters F1. Not too kind.
I haven't checked out this door / window web site but I will. And then maybe even make some suggestions to them : )
In the mean time if you are not getting all the 'types' it may not be a shared parameter problem it may be because  you don't have the 'type catalog' file associated with the family file. The 'type catalog' file is a *.txt file with the exact same name as the family file and must be placed in the same folder as the family file.
Then when you load the family you will be prompted to select the individual types from a table.
A good example is try to load a structural beam or column and see what happens. Then go investigate the folder where the family came from.
You will see several family files with asociated type catalog files.

DGCAD,

Thanks for the reply.

I have purchased and downloaded a number of your Revit videos. They are very useful. However, a video that would be very useful to a number of us Revit users that have been using the product for a while would be a video, or series of videos, on how to edit a window or door family that you have obtained from somewhere else.

Here in the Washington DC metro area there are more traditional style residences than contemporary, especially in Northern VA. Most of the projects I work on involve windows and doors with grids and lights. I have downloaded a number of window and door families, Kolbe being one, that come close to what I need for a particular project, but are not close enough. Trying to edit these window and door families is beyond me. I can never find all the constraints, parameters, etc and can never get the family to do what I need it to do. An example would be a door with vertical and horizontal lights. I need one with a low, decorative panel instead of the lower two or thre rows of lights. Every time I try to edit one I have obtained from Kolbe, Pella, or anywhere else the model is so complex that trying to edit it is too frustrating for me to attempt.

Just a suggestion. But I would purchase them in a heart beat.

If you can take a few minutes and provide the family with a clear graphical explanation of what you want I'll take a crack at it.

on the whole when someone is refered the to Help file is for very basic answers that are clearly in the Help file. I'm sure no one would send you to the Revit Familes Guide for a product supplied by someone else. Though Autodesk itself has started refering Manufacturers to the Revit Families Guide. I understand your point, but refering users to the Help is a tool just as Revit is a tool. They both have there places and they both can be abused when improperly applied.

DGCAD,

I tried to post a door family I would like to edit, but apparently the ZIP file was too large.

It is the ZIP file from Kolbe that contains the family, a template, the catalog txt file, and some other files. If you send me an email I can send it to you. Or I can put it up to my FTP and give you access.

Look at my web site www.e-cad-it.com

My email is there.
