We recently upgraded one of our project from Revit 2010 to 2011 and once it was done some of our keynotes in our views turned to blank with a ? when you highlight them.  When we went to one of the keynotes properties it still shows the correct keynote number but it doesnt show in the view.

We tried to renew the path to the txt file - didnt work

We tried to use our backup text file to overide the original to see if out keynotes would find that file - didnt work

When we try to create a new keynote using the same number it shows up blank.

It seems like our project cannot find certain text in our keynote file.  Some keynotes appear right others dont and never will.

Anyone know what is going on the only thing i can equate this to is when you copy a keynote and paste it into a different view and it shows up with the question mark and its not assoiciated to anything.

Was this a key note or a material note, there is a difference?

Your key note file path is set in the project.  Open the project, goto the annotate tab, click on the down arrow on the "tag" bar, click on keynote settings, in the popup, click on browse, find your file, set the file path type and numbering method then close by clicking on OK.  (BTW - we always keep the project keynote file with the model file.  The office standard may change but this file needs to be controlled with the project.)

Its not an issue of obtaining the path we know how to do that.  We have it set by user and the path is by sheet, relative and connected to our file which is in our central file folder where the central file is.  This is not our issue our issue is that some of our keynotes we placed already that had numbers associated to them do not show in the sheet they are blank with a ? but in the properties they are still assigned to the text note in the keynote text file they belong to.  Some how "some" of them are not showing in the sheet.

I don't know what a "path by sheet is"... maybe you meant number by sheet?

In a project upgrade, it might be possible that some associations might get messed up.  Is this a keynote "user"?  If not, then add a new keynote - user - select your note and see if the number now shows.  This really sounds like the assigned keynote did not get converted.  If that is the case, just change the question mark to the right number.

Yes number by sheet.

The keynotes are made user. If we try to create a new keynote and select one of the notes that is associated to one of the blank notes the new keynote turns up ? as well.

I don't understand - you wrote  "....If we try to create a new keynote and select one of the notes that is associated to one of the blank notes the new keynote turns up ? as well....  You mean place a new keynote - not create?

" ...as well"?  So you are saying it now works and both keynotes are there?

How do we manually change the ? mark to the number? In the properties the correct number is still already assigned to the keynote and even if we go through properties reselect that number in the text file its still wont show it in the tag its still remains as ?.

This is not easy to explain.

Some keynote tags do not show the number they just show up ? in the tag.

If we create a new keynote and pick the same keynote number in the text file of one thats corrupted, that keynote tag shows up ? as well.

We tried editing the keynote text file in notepad for keynote #10 and saved it. Repathed to it again and still it came up ?.  I think the only way we can fix the keynotes is to make a new keynote in the text file that is a new number as well, #10 seems to be lost.

Keynotes close to my match line show up this way with the ?.  Tag them far away from the match line then move the tag where it needs to be.

Any other solutions?

I have seen keynotes and material notes loose their host.  Typically, you can just tweak their pointer and they refind what they were pointing to.

It actually knows the host as the custom note does still show and in the legend it is numbered correctly but the actual

keynote bubble is blank. weird

You are using numbered keynotes with a keynote legend - correct?  So your legend has the correct keynote text for that number.  << See - that doesn't mean anything.

Delete the ? keynote - I bet the text is still there because there is something else with that number.  Add a new keynote and if it is an associate element keynote, the keynote will no longer be a ?.  As I said - it got lost.

None of what you say works. In the keynote legend it shows note 4 (auto-numbered by sheet) with the note.  when I look at the associated bubble it is blank, When I click the bubble I see the ? and in the properties it has the correct note.

If I keynote the element but move the bubble away from the match line (plan split into two parts) and place the bubble

the number shows up then I move it back into place. Weird
