Hi, I've named a load of parameters in my project with the syntax parameter name - family type. So for instance the Structural Width for a window would be: Structural Width - Window That way I can easily understand what a shared parameter was intended for. The problem I've just come across is that Revit will not accept a parameter name in a formula with a dash in it (as I think it sees it as a subtract function). Am I correct on this?? Can I not use a parameter name with a dash in it?? (I hope not as it will cause me a load of abortive work...)

OK, after a bit of searching, I came across an Australian web site that states 'Don't use formula symbols for Parameter names'. curse!! Where the hell was the dialog box message warning me of this??? Who writes this product?? It also warns of using spaces - is this correct?? Can I use a colon in the name - i.e. Structural_Width:Windows

In your HELP it states: " Note It is recommended that you do not use a dash (-) when naming parameters.". It also states: "Parameter names in formulas are case sensitive. For example, if a parameter name begins with a capital letter, such as Width, you must enter it in the formula with an initial capital letter. If you enter it in a formula using lower-case letters instead, for example, width * 2, the software will not recognize the formula. " in case you had not read this either.

OK, thanks for that. I still think it would be very useful to warn the user at the time of creating a parameter when they have used a character which will not allow them to do something else in the future. I don't have help open everytime I do something. Something for the wishlist I guess...

Is it OK to use Underscore "_" character in a parameter name? I checked the Help and internet and can find no reason why not... Also, in a few places it stated that spaces should not be used - coudln't find out why though - Anyone know the answer to this??
