I have an older core II duo lap top running XP pro 32 bit with its max of 2 megs of ram.  I cannot afford to replace the computer at this time.  I am wondering if I would get any gain in performance if I switched to windows 7 64 bit?

Sorry, I am showing my age.  I mistyped.  I have 2 GB of ram which is the max that this machine will support.  If I need to buy new I am looking at an HP Pavilion HPE-350T i7-860 with 8 GB ram, 1TB hard drive, 512 MB ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card and a 23" monitor to add to the 24" I now use with my laptop.  This unit is $1000 plus Office.  I am just hoping to post pone the inevitable.
