I have made a double hung window with a nested sash family.  When I insert the family into a project the sashes don't cut correctly.  My cut plane is set so it is interesecting the lower sash so that should be cut and I should not see the upper sash at all.  What I see is the sash frame outline of both sashes as if my cut plane was above both sashes.  To further complicate things this same family displays differently when inserted into another wall elsewhere in the project.  The difference in the walls is their base offset from my first floor level.  I have a split level home and instead of setting up a level for the lower and upper levels, I have one level at the lower level and the upper level walls, floor, windows, etc... are all offset from the lower level.  Then I created a plan region that has a view range using the same offset to properly display, at least in theory, the upper level.  As far as I can tell the only difference playing with my view settings for the upper level makes is when I set the cut plane above the window, at which point I no longer see the window cut.

I have been playing around with my family a little bit and have discovered that if I change the category of the family from window to generic model it cuts correctly, but then my window tags don't work anymore.  Any ideas why a window family doesn't cut correctly but the geometry as a generic model does?

OK, I found that my nested family needs to be shared in order for it to display properly.  I opened my sash family, shared it, and reloaded it into my window family and was warned that a shared nested family can't have parameters that are controlled by the host family.  This is really disappointing as I lose the benifit of nesting my sash if it can no longer be resized by the host family.  Any ideas???  Anyone????

I think building the sash as a nested window is a mistake - overly complicated - but....here are some thoughts

  1. Nested components are treated separately only if shared.  But if the nested sash is set to shared, then it will show up in schedules as a window.  I don't think you want that.
  2. If any part of a family is cut by the view cut plane, then the cut rules for that category apply.  Some categories do not cut - windows do.  This includes invisible lines in families.
Your problems may be caused by a combination of these two issues ... but I can't check them out at this time.

Maybe what I am doing is overly complicated, but I thought I was simplifying my life.  What I did is model a basic sash with frame and glass.   This is also where my detail linework for indicating swing is located.  I have yes/no parameters that control the visibility of the detail lines to allow this one sash to show graphically as fixed, right swing, left swing, or an awning.  I then load this sash into my window families where I am essentially just modeling a frame.  The host family then controls the parameters for the sash so it resizes when the family does as well as swing visibility.  What I was trying to avoid is modeling all of the window geometry in one family because it gets so messy with all the reference planes and dimensions.  I actually also use the sash in my glazed door families as well.  If you have a better suggestion for modelling this families please let me know.
