 Hello everyone:

I am having difficulties making a spiral stair to reach the second level.  I understand it's limited to fewer than 360 degrees and it only has 5' in dia. so how can I continue going up??? Is there anyway to "cheat" the program?

Any help is strongly appreciated!

Best,

Andre

Oh, I'm sorry.  It looked like your question was how to get a spiral staircase to roatate more than 360 degrees between levels, and the solution in that case is to use two staircases, one starting where the other ends.

Is your problem that it cannot reach the 2nd foor because it does not have the desired number of risers, you're attempting less than 360 degrees, and you're asking if the riser heights can be altered to allow greater than 7" per tread?  If so, in stair properties, under 'risers' you can click on Maximum Riser Heightand input a new upper limit...  hope this helps, instead.

It's so frustrating because I don't need much more to reach the 2nd floor....the stair is existing and will remain so I don't have to be accurate, it's for design purposes really.

I did copy one on top the other but how can I cut, trim, whatever you want to call it, the rest?

Hmmm, maybe take a screenshot?  Do you mean the railings and the stringers aren't lining up quite right?

You say you're close -- If you alter the maximum tread height, you stair should be able to stretch a little more, and make the distance between floors...  It's not legal, that's why 7" is the default.  But If it's existing and is just for reference, maybe that's the way to go, it'd be easiest.

I have done numerous of these spiral stairs and in the current code for residential use see section 1009.8, CBC, I think that IBC is the same code section, you must maintain 78" head room this tends to be the governing criteria the maximum riser allowed is 9.5".

This is really easy.  Just split your stairs up vertically at elevations equal to the correct number of risers.

  1. Say the floor to floor height is +/-30'  and your risers can be just over 7"... You need 51 R .
  2. So lets try dividing this in 3 sections.  The first run of 17 R will go 10' .
  3. Set your stair to go from first floor to first floor offset 10'and you will have 17 R.
  4. Complete that stair, copy it in place then rotate it so that the beginning meets the end of the first section.
  5. Change this stairs properties to start at first floor - offset 10', goes to first floor offset 20'.
  6. 2/3's done - repeat for last section.
