Help!!!I am using Revit Structure 2010 at work. I created a family using a W8x18 and then loaded in a C8x11.5 to be used as a cap. I placed them together but when I load into the model they only show up as a predefined length. So whatever I put as the length in the family editor, that is what is shows up in the model. My question is how can I make it vary like the other beams. I have to place it multiple times with multiple different lengths. Please help!Much appreciated for a fast answer as I am at work. Thanks Mike

You need to re-define the length in the family so that it is an instance dimention rather than a type demension.

Thanks for the quick reply! What is the easiest way to change the dimension?

Please re-read my previous post.....The dimension (label) must be a type - not instance variable.

I have tried dimensioning then using the option bar and adding a parameter(bunch of different ones), nothing seems to work.

I know nothing about your family..... you created it. How did you control the length of the W8x18 in the family? If you don't understand family parametrics, download the family guide from AutoDESK. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=11091739

I guess two things come to mind here. 1. What family template did you use as the beam is essentially a point and click family...so I am not sure why your beam will now allow you to just simply draw it as you normally would. 2. If you did use the correct template, make sure that your endpoints locked to the reference planes otherwise it will not adjust for length. You may want to post the family so we can look at it.
