How can I manage to change the propeties of a wall so I can apply different color paints to it. Initially this kitchen is built with generic 8" walls . When i try to edit its properties it wont allow me.

This goes for the floors as well. How do I split the floor into sections so that way I can change it to whatever material besides the standard concret/wood/carpet.

How can I apply a back splash in my kitchen ?

All materials are defined in the family and the material editor.  Each material is identified using a unique material name.  You edit your materials in the manage / materials.

With walls / floors / ceilings, the materials are assigned to each layer and you can identify them in the wall types.  I would think this is not what you want for individually painted areas though.   You can split any face and "paint" a new finish on those areas.

A back splash is usually defined in the counter-top family.
