Hi gurus,

I am a newbie here.  Have been using Revit 2010 for more than a year now for interior design school projects and family&friends projects Puh.  i tried rendering once or twice in Revit but couldn't get it to work for some reason.  Any suggestions on where to get started (books, tutorial videos, etc)? Heard that Revit is using Mental Ray now. Does that mean we can do photo-realistic rending in Revit now?  If this is the case,  then there is really no benefit to try importing 3D Revit models into 3D max or Maya for photo-realistic rendering, right?I just took a Maya class but cannot locate any plugin to enable the import of 3D models from Revit to Maya.   I assume Revit 3D models can be easily imported to 3D max as I have heard.  I just cannot find a cheap 3D Max class locally that won't break my wallet :/.Thanks a lot gurus in advance!!

try the export to fbx settings... Maya uses mental ray too., and fbx is an extension swap between autodesk' software. Check on maya on importing/exporting settings. rendering in maya has a lot of features that the revit renderer hasnt.

Besides that, you can optimize a lot in mental ray... when you have the access to the real settings.

Check this guy, i use the very same settings/techniques to make faster all the renderings. http://3dsmaxrendering.blogspot.com/2010/07/efficient-interior-lighting-with-mental.html

i used to enable fg, with 2 bounces for exterior, and 5 or 4 for interiors. And GI with a big radius. Thats it.

Thank you so much for many good pointers nastyclown! So, by usng fbx extension, I can import revit 3d model into both Maya and 3D Max, correct?

Do you use 3D max also?  How do you compare rendering in 3D vs. Maya?

Thank you agin.  Really appreciate your help.

rendering is kinda the same... since its a plugin called "mental ray". The company that develops that software is mental images (www.mentalimages.com). You can achieve the same final results, what change is the workflow. I never used maya, but i know you can see realtime materials on the geometry you are using... in 3dmax you have to render a preview (unless you enable directx materials, and get with it an idea of whats going to happen on the rendering). Im too lazy to learn maya... so i think i stay in max.
