I am trying to use Revit 2011 to create a sidewalk and roads. I need them to follow the contours of the topography. Splitting the surface seems to work, but it is very difficult to edit the sidewalks as the project changes.

Lay out your sidewalks with detail lines in a working view. Split your surface using the detail lines as a guide. When you need to modify, modify your detail lines. Then use the merge surfaces to get rid of your old sidewalk layout and re-spit the surface.

I was hoping that there would be a way to change the sidewalk without having to merge the surfaces and start over; however, this should work. Thanks for the help.
