Hi guys im a architecture student going into my 3rd year. i only started using autocad in my 2nd year and only found out what a EPIC idea revit is a few weeks ago. i quickly understood the concepts of bim (i think) and all that which is just great but then the actually making something part came and well lets just say i was pretty close to throwing my laptop out the window i wanted to create a small post and beam structure but for some reason every time i load in a beam it goes below level 0 and i cant move it up or down so i cant really do anything :s also being in the uk i had to switch everything to metric but im not sure if i got the rite templates or libraries does anybody have a link to them?? Thanks

welcome to revit, my young padawan xD Can you post some images of your specific problem? thx. Im thinking you have to select the beam, click left button, properties, and check the level of that beam.

One way to start an metric template is select new project and in the dialog select no template and you will get a metric or imperial option. Very empty template though. In the install you should have gotten a metric/imperial choice. Beams go under the floor not overhead. Go next floor up to get into the right ballpark. You may need to add a level above.

hey thanks for the warm welcome guys i tried the levels thing but the only issue is that i cant move the component other than left or right in 3d space it wont go up or down :S so im thinking there might be some sort of constraint not letting me move it ?? also in elevation it only shows up as a thick line no thickness to it ??

on a elevation view, check "detail level" to "medium" or high. the same works for plan views.

becouse is constrained, when you move it up or down, check the "disjoin" box. But its better and faster creating a grid , creating an elevation to that grid, and creating there the design you need. Heres a video http://www.screencast.com/t/ZDJmNzYyNT
