Hi, I've modelling a canopy in AutoCAD which I want to import and place on my revit model. I am thinking that the best way to do this is create a new Generic Model Family and import the model, apply a material and then place it as a component in my model. They works generally, but if I import as DWG, I cannot seem to apply a material and Revit keeps seeing it as a DWG file. I tried IFC, but Revit want to create a new project from the IFC file, I cannot seem to import it into a generic model family. Whats the best way of doing this? Cheers.

once .dwg is imported.... go to Settings>Object Styles...>Imported Objects> add the materials you want.
