hi, I've been using Revit for about a year, but am flat out stuck. I am trying to use the conceptual massing tool in Revit to create a building mass with an undulating roof shape for almost a week with no success. I would like to do this in massing and not modeling (which I understand how to create this using swept blends etc. that follow a path). How do I do this in conceptual massing? Struggling with Revit for a week.

basically...when one holds the cursor on top of "Create Form" within the massing function, there is an image of a conceptual mass with multiple profiles along a path. I try to draw one such profile and copy it in plan view to slightly modify it for my undulating mass, however revit has locked in position. Do I have to draw each profile from scratch? Thanks.

I have the profile drawn in CAD....I have also tried numerous times to import the profile, and rotate it parallel to the profile in order to trace over it, but Revit will not allow the CAD image to be rotated to do this. Any clue?

OK...sketched individual, parallel profiles (trapezoidal shapes) by successively sketching in in separate work planes that follow a grid pattern I set up...then ,highlighted the profiles and clicked create form. Now I have the error message "Unable to create form". The profiles are closed loops with not segments on top of each other. What am I doing wrong? I've watched tutorials on designreform and nothing I have seen shows how to create a conceptual mass from mutliple profiles. Thanks.

last question in this thread... I am also unable to see reference planes in 3d view when I create them. When I open a new conceptual mass, such reference planes show up fine and I am able to sketch on them for a conceptual massing, but in this project file I can't see any of the reference planes. I've searched every menu...are reference planes hidden in default 3d view in projects? If so, how do you turn them on? I'd REALLY appreciate ANY help on this - Revit is truly making me miserable. Going to sleep now. Thanks.

Several things i must say: " I would like to do this in massing and not modeling (which I understand how to create this using swept blends etc. that follow a path). " - Why do you want to create that by "Massing" if you can create that in a simple way by "modeling"? "I am also unable to see reference planes in 3d view when I create them. When I open a new conceptual mass, such reference planes show up fine and I am able to sketch on them for a conceptual massing, but in this project file I can't see any of the reference planes. " - Of course, you only see those Ref. Planes in 3D view if you are in the "Conceptual Mass Template" and NOT in Project. " have the profile drawn in CAD....I have also tried numerous times to import the profile, and rotate it parallel to the profile in order to trace over it, but Revit will not allow the CAD image to be rotated to do this. Any clue?" - Do you know how Revit work with "Work Planes"? Search in your HELP menu "I'd REALLY appreciate ANY help on this - Revit is truly making me miserable. Going to sleep now." - Good night. Ohh and BTW, we only can help you if we know what are you trying to do, so, put here some screenshots to figure out...

Thanks for the reply. I think all of my problems stemmed from trying to do conceptual massing using the "in place mass" function within the project (plus it being almost 3AM EST). I opened a new conceptual mass family and the was able to do everything I was trying to do. I'm just curious though, why did they make the capabilities of "in place mass" and conceptual mass different? What is the point? I had been pulling my hair out for several days and was about to reload Revit because I thought there was something wrong with the install since I was able to mass complex shapes within the project in Revit 2009 (albeit using the old extrusion-based massing commands).

long story short...when I said I was using the "conceptual massing tool" in the start of this thread, I was actually using "in place mass". I just assumed they were the same tool and/or the same functionalities.

alright, I tried this in conceptual massing mode...still cannot add an edge to the top of a mass. I would like to add a vertical profile actually, but I'll take an edge. Is there any way to do this in Revit, or is this program only capable of manipulating office building type conceptual masses with flat roofs?

here is a screenshot...in this case i added a horizontal profile, but cannot add a vertical on or add edges to the top of the mass. I've watched 5 different videos on conceptual massing now and read through as many tutorials as I can, but nothing. So, I would greatly appreciate any help on this. I've been at this for a couple weeks now - wits end Thanks in advance.
