I have downloaded several objects from several different sources. Every time I change one object’s color several other object colors change at the same time. Is there a way to tell how they are all connected?

Typically you can select the 'OBJECT' you want to change and do so in the properties box. Select the object, go to the properties box, select Edit/New and 'DUPLICATE'. Change that objects properties and the others should remain as they were. If you don't duplicate the object, you change the properties for all instances of that object.

I might add when solids are joined they tend to inheret the materials of the object they're joined to... In this case its often necessary to use the paint tool to paint the appropriate faces with the appropriate material.
