Is there a way to change the crop region so that it is not rectangular?

negative, but you can use masking regions to hide portions of your project...

In addition to what Alabaster said, you can use a rectangular callout and masking in the callout view, and then hide the callout bubble and fake in the shape you want with linework. You can add a new (very small) call out bubble that uses the reference other view to tag this fake "call-out" bubble.
