I get this on some family files but not all. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

Yes, you're doing something wrong. it looks like you're trying to make a railing? this you can't do by component, use the railing, stairs or ramp comand instead. when you open the famillie, choose load into project. now in jour project draw a railing and select tthe desired railing.
