I have the architects revit model and he has drawn openings in the walls but I can't dimension the width of the openings. He has a gap, furr strip, and drywall all stacked on the tilt panels, and it won't let me see what the actual opening size in my tilt panel needs to be. When I dimension it; it graps the outside edge of the drywall. He has created the wall type correcly by having a core and then putting substate with a finish on top of it, but even when I tell it I want the face of core for the dimension to snap to it gives me nothing but the face of the drywall. I even tried to turn the furring and drywall off hoping that it would let me snap to it then but all it did was extend the tilt panel all the way out to the edge of where the drywall should be showing up. Plus, if I just add up the drywall opening and all the air gaps and drywall I can put it in that way but it still won't let me snap to place the opening in the same location. If anybody has any thoughts on how to figure this out please help!!

Have you tried using the Tab key to get to the right line?

Yes I've tried that, that doesn't work at all. I t just sits on the edge of the drywall and doesn't pick anything else.

The problem may reside in the family that cuts the opening. The family needs reference planes in it that define the rough opening.

You're probably on to something there with the reference planes. After further investigation of the openings it turns out the arch is using the wall opening tool under the Modify tab to draw these things in (I usually use the door opening tool under arch for these types of openings). You can see I just cut a new one right above the 5'-8" opening with a 2'-6" opening. All I had to do was drop one in and drag it as far as I want and it automatcially cuts the wall and wraps the drywall and everything. I don't think that there is any way to define these types of openings with refernce planes? Although, I now know how he put his openings in and what you're getting at with the reference planes it still doesn't get me much closer to solving it.

I guess the thing to do it to get the architect to draw using the door openings not the wall opeings. On the attached picture the opening on the left is a door opeing and you can dimension to either the opening or the brick which ever you prefer. But the opening on the right is a wall opening and can only be dimensioned to the face of the brick.
