I'd like a temporary tray, similar to the quick access toolbar, where I could place my most commonly used detail components on the fly. For a large project, even well organized detail component libraries can become cumbersome...

I simply place the common ones in a drafting view in my template. That way I can organize them by type, masonry, steel, conc. etc.. Float the drafting view as a small window near you detail. Then simply select a detail component and use CS [create similar]. You can also use detail components in groups and manage them through the project browser.
