check out this image. it shows mt cooktop 100% transparent.

 

its metal and chrome. above the counter, and in 3d views its the typical grey color for metal...why is it clear in my plan view?

the family most likely has the geometery set to only be visible in 3d and elevations. whats your seeing there is just a 2D linework representation of the cooktop. The reason for this is to speed regeneration times. The way to solve this is to go into the family editor and in your plan view set a masking region under the linework.
