I am a revit structure user - i have been asked to produce an animation where the building is phased - different areas of the building appearing in the same view over time to mirror the construction sequence, - is there a way of doing this in revit at all?  exportable as an avi? i am completely stumped.  i can always export it and do it in sketchup but would prefer to be all within revit if possible - any advice would be most welcome.

You could use Revit's phasing and assign elements to the proper phase, develop 3D views with phase filters to show each phase, export the images and stick them together in an AVI external to Revit.  If you have already done the model and documentation, then this can be highly disruptive.  You might also end up with more phases than you can easily manage.

Another solution is to assign a WBS type parameter or hijack an existing parameter and fill in a "phase".  Then establish the views and use view filters to filter down to the WBS element.

Or you can use Navisworks, export the Revit model and tie it to a MS Project or Primavera schedule via WBS via Timeliner in Navisworks.

thanks for the reply, much appreciated, I have managed to get the building set up in phases and can do different views and stich them, am intrigued by the WBS solution, what is a wbs parameter (sorry still new to revit really) and would i have to do this for every element in tne model?  i do have navis works but have not really had the opportunity to use it.
