Hi, I'm trying to build an octagonal column family in which the dimension of the sides as well as the height are variable. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? thanks!

Have you used the Families Guide? It will help you understand the processes you need to do this. You can find the guide under your HELP pulldown in 10 or at this address: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=13080413&siteID=123112&linkID=9243097 - why they didn't keep this in 2011 I do not understand!

I have been through the families guide thanks but still do not quite understand the best way to accomplish this. I would like to make the column variable based on its width meaning if I enter the width of the column the 8 sides will scale up or down accordingly. any ideas?

If you can control a square shape using parametrics, you can control a hex or an octogon using the same basis. - Center you "column" on you x-y origins and add reference planes to eithr side of the x & y origin planes that are eq dim from the origin and are controlled with the same label dimension.
- Now use those planes to descibe your column extrusion.
- Test (flex) it by changing the label dimension.
- Once you have the square shape working - add additionl referece planes using the same label dimension and edit your geometry to the new shape.

Do you know how I can keep the angles "pinned" so it remains an octagon?

You don't have to mess with any angles...! Place your ref planes at the correct angles... Your label dimesnion control where the planes are - not the length of the sides.
