does anyone know if it is possible to have one project open and rendering while working on a different one at the same time? if it is possible, how??!?! thanks!

Yes, but only on a 64 bits computer (with at least 8 GB RAM).......

you have to run two sessions of Revit. one for rendering and one for working.
