No NO NO.... This is not new news and everyone using Revit is normally aware of the fact the Revit is not backwards compatable. (Yon caan never save down.) Lots of Posts on this and AutoDESK makes this very clear.

Yeah we all know that but it is unfair. they should build a way to do it like autocad. Of course limiting each program capability.

YES of course there always a way to do such a thing. 1. If you only need to open it, post a request of revit forums and you can bet someone will have an old version of REVIT (eg. v2009 ) that they have never upgraded and then they can open it up for you. 2. If you need to work on the file and keep it in 2009 for some reason, find an old version of REVIT online (Google it) and use it for the 30 day free trial period - or Im sure there must be less-than-legal old versions floating around... Revit 2011 can open 2009 but Revit 2009 can NEVER open 2011 Edited on: Mon, Oct 25, 2010 at 10:27:59 AM

"Yeah we all know that but it is unfair. they should build a way to do it like autocad. Of course limiting each program capability." Then you get to deal with the guys that refuse to upgrade, and all the programs that come with downgrading your files. I could be wrong here, but I thought that not being able to downgrade isn't a matter of Autodesk just not wanting to do it, but the way that new versions are created makes the files created in each one incompatable. " YES of course there always a way to do such a thing. 1. If you only need to open it, post a request of revit forums and you can bet someone will have an old version they can open it up for you. 2. He didn't specifically say that he upgraded the file, but it was certainly implied.

Ok, so first off, they could not build Revit like they did AutoCAD and make it backward compatible because it is BIM not CAD...it has information built in and is not just a bunch of lines. A line in 2009 Cad is little different than a line in 2010 CAD, where as a mass with all these properties in 2010 could be much different than what 2009 even knows. With that said there IS a way to take a 2010 file back to 2009 by exporting as a DXF from 2010 and then importing the DXF back into 2009. I belive it is a DXF, you could search the fourm for simialr posts as my old account broncos4life has posted to similar questions in the past with the correct file type to do this with. Using this method to export and then importing will lose some information from one to the other how ever but is the ONLY way to do this, and will continue to be the only way to do this.

You can't open a 2011 file in 2010, what you can do is in 2011 export that in IFC then in 2010 import that IFC, you gonna loss some elements but.... http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=15649365&linkID=9243099

Hai guys There is no way to to use 2011 saved file to open in 2009, i think autodesk should think on it, and make is easy to work for everyone, otherwise very less people will use the revit due to this problem, and not all company can buy every years upgrading software, Autodesk have to think seriously about it, Also in revit lot of things to very difficult, we can see Revit is good for 3d, not easy for use as 2nd or constructions drawing, i m working on Revit near 2 years if i compare between Autocad and Revit, Revit need lot of time to do 2d drawings then Autocad, haroon Malaysia
