Does anybody know if it is possible to edit the Revit (2010) materials per project in any way other than the Material Editior? Another possibility would be to change where Revit is looking for the material library? On another note is the material library project/file based, local computer based? Or can I make Revit look to our network for all of our materials the way we do with 3ds Max materials? I jumped on a project at work to check the possibilities of rendering in Revit (I primarily render in 3ds max) but the project probably has hundreds of materials. I would like to delete all the excess materials and start from scratch, building a standard material library for our office as I go. thanks J

Not sure what happens in 2011 but in 2010, you can add materials in your project folder for project specific items.

Please read these topic in your HELP:

Creating a Material

Changing the Render Appearance of a Material
Specifying an Image File for a Render Appearance
Texture Alignment

Those should answer your questions.  If you run into problems, come back with some more specific questions.

thanks for the quick reply, not all the answers i was looking for but i think i was able to find everything out searching the net.

Still haven't found out if the materials are editable in any other form than in Revit. I have found that there is no way to purge unused materials, along with hatch patterns. Seems like another item to chalk up to the 2011 wishlist. Its really not worth my time to delete them one at a time, but it seems like that is the only way to do it.

Transfering materials from project to project seems simple enough, now we can have a continually evolving mat library that references our existing 3ds max materials.

You're saying you can use 3ds Max mtls in Revit?

I have been able to use all of the texture maps that I would be using in Max now in Revit. It's not using a saved shader out of Max, the material still needs to be created fresh in Revit. So, technically speaking its possible to create the same rendering in Revit that would otherwise be using Max for. However, until Revit supports distributed rendering/ backburner its far more efficient to render in Max still.
