In a nutshell, I am trying to figure out if it is possible to either a) modify the existing family templates that come with Revit, or b) save our own family templates to be used later?

We have custom shared parameters on our door families to make the doors schedule the way that we want. This works very well for modifying existing door families, however, when someone tries to create a new door with the door template those parameters must be added in manually. I would like to add our parameters to the door template so we can avoid that issue.

From what I have seen, I can't find any way to do that. Am I on track on there or am I missing something?

Thanks!

No way to save the template I believe.... Just create a new door with only your parameters in it and save it named as a door "template" but as a family and in the template location.  You might want to rename the door template to See>>> xxx family.  Now to create a door, they have to start with the family instead of a template.

Actually, if you set up your new template family like WWHub said, you can then cnage the file extension from .rfa to .rft, and it works as a new family template.

Edit:

I should say, it works as far as I can tell.
