New to MEP. Concentrating on electrical. Do I want to "Link" the architectural model to the MEP model, or open the architectural model and place the electrical directly into it?

Then copy the grid into your model and turn the architects ceiling off - or create your own ceiling.  You don't want to use the architect's model - link it like TKennedy suggested.

okay, then..... if the electrical is in its own model, linked with the architectural, and I want to perform interior renderings from the architectual model, will the lighting show up? or must i place lighting in the arch model for rendering purposes only?

back to my previous question now too.. if i create a ceiling grid in electrical model, and there is one already existing in arch, does this create a sort of clash? should i limit modeling my ceiling to the electrical model only?

You should be able to link in the MEP into the architectural and if their lights - are really lights... all should work.  Actually, if you have architecture in house, you may be able to open the MEP model and render.
