When I render curtin walls, windows and anything made of glass it renders solid like a grey wall. Not clear. Is this a common bug or just one on my schools version of revit 2010?

98% of the time when you think you have found a bug, point your finger at yourself because the bug is you....

Not being mean - just that there is much to learn and don't call it a bug - it is just something you don't know.  If you search your HELP for glass, you will see all the properties you can assign to the material - glass.

I have tried changing the material, I have tried hours of google searching to try and fix this problem on my own. Now I need help. Thanks for the advise, but I need more to try out.

My teacher doesn't know why revit 2010 is doing this. He says that revit 2009 didn't have this problem.

Heres a thought, can I download new materials and load them like a family into revit. I can't make directory or system wide changes on the computer.

Are you sure you have checed the properties of the panel?

Are you sure it is glas or is it a solid panel?

Does it show transparent in a 3D view?

As you can see in the image it is possible to have both sollid and transparent panels in the same curtain wall.

1 select the panel

2 check in the elementproperties if you have set it to glazed.

3 when you don't have a glazed panel create one;

edit type -> duplicate -> select the desired glass in material.

Similar problem!!!  I could not get the "storefront" transparent - same grey described in this forum.  I tried changing the glazed panels to no avail.  Frustrated, I constructed a mock wall to test if there was something wrong with the model.  The mock wall worked perfectly!  So I compared the mock wall with the actual model.  Since this is a commercial remodel I have different phases: Existing, Demolition and New.  The mock wall and storefront is all "New".  The actual model is "Existing".  So, I revised the actual model storefront to "New" and guess what?  The storefront is perfect!

I also tried this, since I have different phases.  I set the storefront in the actual model back to "Existing" and then adjusted the View Properties from Show All to Show Complete.  Viola!  Clear glass!  I was never really clear, pardon the pun, on the difference between Show All and Show Complete.  I would welcome any input.

Yes, you need to learn the phasing in Revit.  In particular lookup in HELP the 'phase filter' and either apply one to the view from the OTB Revit ones or create you own for the rendering project that controls the materials as you desire.

Thanks Tom, I appreciate your input.  While you were writing, I was editing my prior post.  I actually found the problem in the View Properties, Show All v. Show Complete, with Show Complete working.  Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

The best best is the Revit help file on phasing.  When I was teaching Revit I would spend anywhere from 2-4 hours on the subject so more than can be put into a forum post.  The basic idea is that you are setting the phase of the view and always looking back in time via the phase filter.  the phase filter is the set of "time glasses" that you view the past with.  The phase filter matrix holds the visibilty setting for each of the four 'states' an object can have. New, Existing. Demolished, or Temporary.  If a state of an object is set to <by category> it will render via the material for the category or object.  If the state is <over-ridden> it will render to the graphic over-ride set which is controlled by the material assigned to the material 'phase-existing' or any of the other state over-rides.

Again the help file is a good read.

You will find this on many of my posts:

THE PROJECT RULES!

If you have a material in your project called Glass and it is blue, and you create a family with a material called glass and it is green, it will show as blue when loaded into this project.   Either change the material in the project or give the material a unique name in the family.  But remember, once that new material is loaded into your project, then once again THE PROJECT RULES.
