How come whenever I mess with a custom family in revit and save it once, I end up with like 3 different family files in the folder like column.0001, column.00002, and column.0003?

Those are your backups. You can set how many Revit makes under the main options panel in the 'R' pulldown.

yeah very new to this program so I can't find a main options panel nor can I find the 'r' pulldown.

If you are in 2010 - BTW - You don't say and you should on any post - Click on the Revit R in the upper left corner.
