OK, so I am modeling a stepped footing for a wall.  I edited wall profile to get the required steps.  Then I modeled in-place footing to create the sloped portion of the step.  I selected the face of the wall as the work plane for the in-place extrusion, but selecting centerline doesn't change my problem.  When I draw it in, by default it sticks out too far towards me, and not quite far enough away from me, since I set the extrusion to equal values +/- relative to the work plane.  OK, no problem so far.  I join the in-place footing to the normal wall footing, so that the edges clean up.  In the default arrangement, in elevation view (with view cutting through the footing), everything looks fine.  But in 3d and plan views, I can see the edges, since it sticks out from the wall footing.  Ok, no problem.  I use the grips to drag the extrusion to match the front and back of the wall footing.

But now the problem starts to show up.  In elevation view (still cutting through the footing), the extruded part is blank (hatch disappears) and the line weight changes.    It shouldn't be this way, since I am still cutting through it.  Plus I can now see the edges of the extrusion, even though it is joined to the wall footing.   In 3D iso view, it looks correct though.  So why has the hatch disappeared?  I then try to override the hatching, to find out that the cut settings have no effect.  I have to override the projected surface pattern to get anything to show up.  But then i can still see the edges, and the concrete hatch has changed from its nice normal thin line weights, to some ugly big heavy thick lines that I seem to have no control over.  I saw this once before, in RS2009.  But I am using RS2010 now, and it is different project.

Does anyone know why this is happening?  I attached files to show the default and adjusted conditions, so that you can see what is happening.

Here are screen caps showing how it looks after I move the edges to match the wall footing edges.  With the last image showing how it looks after I override the surface pattern.

I really want to know why the hatch is all screwed up in line weight.
