I am making a new wall type. This wall is gwb, vapor barrier, stud wall, and gwb. I would like to put the batt insulation within the stud wall width. But when I do it, it shows it right next to the stud wall not within it. So my 5" wall width goes to an 8 1/2" wall width. Any help would be appreciated on how to fix this?

When two items occupy the same space... studs and insulation, you need to pick one.  We just call it studs.

I appreciate your quick response. But if I cannot callout the insulation within the stud in the structure wall type, then how will it show up on any of my building sections or details? What about my materials list for when a contractor wants to bid the project?

Batt insulation is added as a detail element.  If you want that "layer" to note correctly using keynote and take off correctly, you will have to do it as a combined item... Wood studs with Batt insulation fill ...

Stupid way of answering his very good question.  I see one can add thermal properties but then gets all wrong about the R values.  This is something that needs to be changed in my humble opine.  Keynotes are a pain.

What was stupid about it, it is a process that works?

BTW - We have been using keynotes for over 10 years and they work very well.  The note I was referring to here is a material note, not a keynote.  We have multiple stud wall materials for different studs and with/without insulation.

Well i just made a wall in revit assigned it batt insulation nothing else . . . gave it 3.5" thickness revit assigned it the R-value of 26.5683  Now to me that is 'STUPID"

I get that kenotes are useful (although i have observed them annoyingly change to question mark without warning) Their methoid is arcane and requires a whole bunch of setup.  Sometimes one can use a keynote and sometimes one cannot.  It is clumsy.

But when Revit fails to implement a simple thermal value correctly then i stand firm . . . it is not only stupid, it is "WRONG".

I should love to be enlightened by your superior knowledge mate and i probably have not done sometnhing correctly (an occurrance in revit about which i am intimately and sadly occasionally guilty) Just trying to make an energy compliance set on a residence and finding it disturbingly involved. Even the qs-Wall Quantities by Assembly schedule tells me that it's R- value is 26.5683 . . . sheesh.

Mahalo for your time and efforts to un-confuse me :-)

I wish I had Revit here to check out your R value problem but I will not have it for awhile.

If you have keynote or material note question marks, it is because you moved the model element away from the note.  Once you have started fully documenting elements, you have to really pay attention to this.  Sometimes the error is caused by you moving a wall section.   Even if you just slide it down the wall, you may move it somewhat side to side and cause this problem.  Remember, keynotes and material notes are annotative and do not move with the element.

Mahalo, yes i do find things disappear @ will from time to time i try to keep an eye on it . . . would love to know your thoughts on the weird R-value - try assigning thermal properties to a thing with just insulation and give it 3.5" and you might see what i see - or perhaps it is my 2013 version?
