In a family, you can array items. Does anyone know if it is possible to assign the "number" of arrayed items to a variable. For example, adding a repeating detail to a member..based on its length parameter. Or to have voids (or model lines = profiles) arrayed along a members length as in light gage punches in a channel? Or soes anyone have any tips?

When you select one of the objects in an array a line pops up along the array. It has the number of items arrayed, and short leaders to each item. Pick that line and on the options bar there will be a drop down where you can assign a parameter, or add a new parameter.
