Using Revit 2010, When you click on the Home Tab, then click on the Room Button, (Room & Area Section on the Far right of the Home tab)

After Clicking onthe Room button the Place Room Tab is opened.  On the Options Bar, to the Far Right.

you have "RoomSadDrop Down List)" The Drop Down list is where i am trying to get my room names appear.  So I just add the Room tag with the correct name.  Without having to type the name.

Hope i have explained it a little better.  CryingThe place a room tab, opens up the same as Revit 09, you have a drop down list to add room names)

The pulldown to which you are referring to is there so you can place rooms that been deleted from a model view.

So If you place a room in a plan view, then delete it from the plan view, Revit does not actually remove it from the project. It maintains the room information thus allowing you to replace or move the room to a new location.

That pulldown will populate with those rooms ONLY...not rooms that are currently in use.

Check the Help file for Unplaced rooms for more info.

Actually you can add rooms to a room schedule before placing the rooms into your model.  This is frequently done to pre=populate the room list from a program list.  The RDB link will allow this as well as custom developed API's that call to Excel. or Access files or any ODBC compliant DB.

Inside Revit itself you can go to the room schedule and simply click on the add new button to pre-establish a room.

As Brett says, the rooms that get deleted from the model still remain in the schedule as well.

You can pre-populate the room schedule inside Revit by first establishing a room schedule, active the schedule view, and then click the "new" button after the Row: on the options bar.  The new rooms you create will report under "area" "not placed" which is because rooms in Revit can exist logically before they are physically placed into your model.  To place the rooms, go to the room command and make sure to use the drop-down list on the options bar to pick one of the pre-defined rooms from the list.  When you place a room from the list into the model, it will no longer be available to choose from.

There are more advanced ways to build out the room schedule list from an Excel, MS Access or SQL database file.  The free way released by Autodesk is to use the RDB Link tool.  RDB Link will allow for two way communication from Revit to an ODBC database.  You can download the RDB Link tool from the subscription portal of Autodesk.  If you have not used databases before the RDB Link tool will be difficult to use without the database background.

If you want to spend some money, then there are a couple of options:

Affinity for Revit   http://www.trelligence.com/affinity_overview.php  Cryingcopy paste please, site links don't work on my Mac this forum)

Autodesk Consulting sells a tool to link Revit to Excel.  Simple and straight forward.  Contact Autodesk for details and pricing.

Develop your own API to do the task.  Revit ships with all the tools needed, just need to know how to program in .NET and C#.  There is a sample application on the SDK folder of the Revit install DVD.
