One of my co-workers started work in Revit today modifying a few things until it suddenly crashed. There appears to have been a massive failure with the computer and may need a new hard drive.

Anyways, this poses a problem for the rest of us. He was not able to save and relinquish his work and none of us can edit the elements again until he does. Is there a workaround for this? Would it be possible to open up Revit, change my user name to his, and relinquish?

We are using Revit 2010. Thanks

My assumption was correct.

He was using a computer of a person currently on vacation so I had him change the user name to his own and try to relinquish. It worked.

For future reference of thread searches:

If a workset is marked as owned by an individual that did not relinquish, you can fake Revit out to relinquish those elements.

1. Close out of all Revit projects

2. Change your Revit user name to the same as the un-relinquished elements

3.  Create new local file and open it using your "new" Revit user name.

4. Synch with Central and relinquish all

5. Discard changes to local file

6. Change your username in Revit back to your real one.

7. Delete local file of "faked" Revit user name

8. Proceed now as usual working on Revit projects.

Note that there are some risks to this procedure.  The biggest being that the user you are "faking" in your version of Revit may not have synched to central and you potentially lose those changes he/she made.  I would also have all others synch to central and exit the project prior to doing this procedure.  As always be very careful about what file goes where, user name spelling and file clean-up after the procedure.

HTH
