Is it possible to copy a in place family that I have created and insert that family into another project? Or is it a matter of exporting that family and inserting that family as a component into another project?

I have not done this but I would think it depends on how the family was created.  In place familes are created from work planes.  If the family was created from a plan, then copy/paste might work.  Seems to me that if it was created on a vertical plane, that plane would have to be copy-pasted too.

"copy and paste does not work, does anyone know how to?" - YES it does, you don't say what kind of family are you talking about but Cop/Paste works, watch the video: http://screencast.com/t/ODMzZDhj

Agree'd...Copy > Paste defiantly works. Either select item in a view....Cntl + C or go to your project browser, select the family you want to copy....right click and there is a "copy to clipboard" option.

Could anyone please explain me how can I show or add roof rafterts in a section two storey residentail building section view.

You can do that in several ways, go to Forums and search "Roof Rafters", you will see some threads about this, here you have one: http://www.revitcity.com/forums.php?action=viewthread&thread_id=10882
