i'm attempting to create a family for an object for some phasing drawings.  what i want to do is have the ability to change the color of the fill pattern inside the object to demonstrate how it will be phased.  how can i add the parametric ability to change the fill color of this family?  revit '10.  thanks for the time.

I looked at it a little bit, and I'm not seeing a way to change the color of a fill pattern with a parameter. What I know would work however, is to create multiple fill patterns, and turn them on and off with parameters. It's not as clean as what you are looking for, but it would work.

is it possible to create a new and delete the other fill pattern in different "types" within a family? so type 1 is red. type 2 is green. and type 3 is yellow?

Absolutely, although the fill patterns won't actually be deleted, they just won't be visible. One fill pattern will have a visibility parameter assigned to it called something like "Vis 1", the second will be "Vis 2", etc.. Make them type parameters, then in the type properties check or uncheck the appropriate parameters. I attached a small family so you can see what I'm talking about.
